Friday: Get Community Ready

In a disaster such as a big earthquake, there is likely to be widespread damage to power lines, water pipes, buildings, roads, and phone networks.

Emergency services and the council emergency response will be dealing with the most urgent matters, so the people you live nearest to will be your most immediate, and ongoing, source of support.

Everyone will need to pitch in to help each other.

1. Find your nearest Community Emergency Hub

A Community Emergency Hub is a place where you and your neighbours can go to help each other in a major emergency. There are 128 Hubs across the Wellington Region.

Community Emergency Hubs are opened and run by community members not council/Civil Defence.

They are located at community facilities and some schools and can be opened by keyholders living in the local area.

Find your nearest Community Emergency Hub using the map below.

2. Take our Hub Personality Quiz

In a major emergency, official services are likely to be overwhelmed and prioritising the most urgent call outs first. This means everyone will need to pitch in and help each other.

Within our Community Emergency Hub model, there are a range of roles people can undertake to support your community.

There are people in your neighbourhood who have all the skills you need to help – people just like you!

3. Participate in an Emergency Response Practice

Our Community Resilience team host a range of emergency preparedness workshops throughout the year.

An Emergency Response Practice is a 2-hour interactive earthquake scenario where the community can practise standing up and running their Community Emergency Hub.

We welcome people of all ages and abilities to join us and participate in an Emergency Response Practice.
