Overview of the project

Community Emergency Hubs are designated locations across the Wellington region where communities can come together to help each other during and after a disaster.

Since the Community Emergency Hubs were set up in 2016, we have learned a lot from both local and international experiences.

In 2023-2024, we undertook a comprehensive review of the Community Emergency Hub locations across the region and are now proposing changes to make them work better for our communities.

This review identified a need to relocate, consolidate, or establish new Community Emergency Hubs in various locations in order to better enable community response and the connection between communities and their local council Emergency Operations Centre.

As a result of this review, 10 Community Emergency Hubs are proposed to be consolidated across the Wellington City, Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt areas.

Public Consultation will be held for the Hubs that are being consolidated.

The consolidation of the Hubs will:

  • Help communities share resources more effectively during a disaster.
  • Make the Hubs easier to manage before a disaster.
  • Improve coordination with the Council Emergency Operations Centre.

The areas affected by the consolidating of the Community Emergency Hubs are:

  • Wellington City:
    • Hataitai
    • Miramar
    • Tawa
  • Lower Hutt:
    • Naenae
    • Stokes Valley
    • Wainuiomata
  • Upper Hutt:
    • Upper Hutt Central
